Onicomicosis
Onychomycosis is the most common nail disease. It is caused by a germ (dermatophytes and non-dermatophytes, candida) that invades the nail bed.
It makes the nails very thick, hard, they change color (white, off-white, yellow, green, etc.), their shape is deformed, they become more fragile and have a strong smell. This nail plate infection if not treated immediately, there is a risk of it spreading to other nails (hands and feet).
The treatment requires a long time, because the re-emergence of the nail takes place in a period of 6 to 18 months.
Onychomycosis usually affects older people with suppressed immune systems, people with diabetes, people on medication, people with skin lesions and people with "athlete's foot".
Fungi can be transmitted by tools and files (manicures, pedicures) that have not been sterilized, disinfected, sand, common areas (locker rooms, swimming pools, beach showers, etc.) by narrow shoes that cause a rise in temperature, and therefore hyperhidrosis.
The image of the nail often confuses the patient, so a necessary condition is the identification of the nail damage by microbiological examination (culture) of part of the nail. Therefore, by taking the examinations, the appropriate treatment for rehabilitation can be administered. The medication administered (depending on the extent of the affected area) and the cleaning of the affected area by the podiatrist, make the fungus on the nails past.
To prevent onychomycosis you should:
1) Do not walk barefoot in public areas with humidity.
2) Change socks daily (preferably cotton).
3) The shoes should not be tight and should be changed every 1-2 days.
4) Avoid humidity (heat and humidity favor the growth of fungi).
5) Dry your feet very well after the shower, especially between the toes.
6) The frequent treatment by the Podologist
